Mernagh Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Some families omit the final GH and spell their name Merna. It is still found almost exclusively in the same part of the country as it was when it first appears on record, that is in Co. Wexford and the adjacent areas in Counties Carlow and Wicklow. So closely, indeed, are persons of the name associated with the Kavanaghs that it is probable that Mernagh, which is a name of the epithet or agnomen class, is in fact an alias for some branch of the MacMurrough Kavanagh sept. Its earlier spelling, e.g. in the sixteenth century Fiants, was Merenagh, which I take to be derived from the Irish adjective meirtneach, meaning dispirited. We know, of course, that nicknames, arising often from a single incident, tended to become permanent surnames particularly where many families of the same name lived in close proximity.
