Merrad is a family originally from Algeria, North Africa. The Merrad family was a big tribe in Telemcane, but when the French colonised the area the tribe dispersed to many regions of the country, to make it weaker.
Some say that the origins of Merrads is chawi (Amazigh) and some said they came from Turkey, but mostly the Merrads came with the Islamic expansions of the Maghreb, which means they are Arabs. The word, merrad, proves it, in Arabic, means a certain type of ferocious locust that travels in large numbers and eats everything in its path. The word, merrad, is also derived from the Arabic word that means 'rebel'.
Today Merrads are still concentrated in Algeria, mainly in the region of El Grarem and other states, especially Constantine, Blida, and Jijel. A large number emmigrated to France for many reasons.
