Merrifill, infra, (a) Local, 'of Merryfield' probably for Maryfield. Mr. Lower (Patronymica Britannica.) says, 'The site of Salisbury Cathedral is so called in mediaeval documents, being a corruption of St. Mary's Field.' Other spots might easily be so called.
