The surname Merriam or Meriam originated in Kent England and goes back to an Earl of Kent. In the year 1630 three Meriam brother chartered a vessel and settled in Concord and Lexington Massachusetts. They were part of the Great Migration and were Puritans. By trade they had been clothiers in Kent, England. The surname comes from merry ham like 'happy hamlet' and is essentially viewed as meaning 'happy home'. Not at all a 'jolly man'. 'Happy home' or at least 'happy hamlet' like the French word hameau.
