The family traces its roots to the Byzantine Empire, with traditions linking its name to two monks who introduced silk production to Byzantium. Following the fall of Constantinople in 1453, members of the Metaxas family, including Marco Antonios Metaxas, settled in the Ionian Islands, particularly in Cephalonia. There, they became part of the local aristocracy under Venetian rule and were later ennobled, playing significant roles in military, political, and religious spheres throughout Greek history.
