From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

METHKIL: John, son of Michael de Methkil, who granted to the church of S. Marie de Melros his land of Penshiel in the Lammermuir Hills, East Lothian, c. 1230 (Wemyss, II, p. XIV), is the Johannes de Methkill who witnessed the gift of fifteen acres of Balmulinauch (Balmerino) to the church of St. Andrews before 1225 (RPSA., p. 272). He may have been an ancestor of the family of Wemyss of Wemyss. John de Methkil granted the church of Wemys in Fife to the House of Soltre sometime between 1200 and 1240 (Soltre, p. 13), and c. 1228 he witnessed a charter by Malcolm, 7th earl of Fife (Laing, 6). The name is derived from the lands of the same name, now Methil, in Fife.
