Mgbatogu is a surname derived from the ancient Igbo civilization in the eastern part of Nigeria. In the period of its origin, there usually were wars. Wars over land, disputation over property, inheritance, children's legitimacy etc. Even brothers could be at daggers drawn.
But despite the rancorous life of the time, peacemakers abound. One of them was the originator of the name Mgbatogu. He came from the Umudioka clan famed for largely two unique traits as itinerant medicine men - they established several Umudioka homesteads in Awka, Neni and Orlu - and craftsmen who beautified men's faces with indelible marks carved in with knives - igbu ichi, in Igbo.
The man sought to establish to the combatants in any fray that his main interest in intervention was to make peace. He often made it clear that he didn't intend to lose his own life in the process.
Hence Mgbatoguegbunam means 'may my mediation in this matter not kill me'.
