From the Hebrew personal name meaning 'who is like God.' It is synonymous with Miciah or Micah (Numbers XIII, 13; I Chron. V, 13). Michael was first recorded bishop of Glasgow (Dowden, p. 294). Magister Michael witnessed a charter by William, bishop of St. Andrews before 1214 (Scon, p. 35), and Michael was abbot of Cambuskenneth in 1307 (Dowden, p. 201).
