A name descriptive perhaps of its first bearer, from Middle Scots meikill, meikle, mekill, "big, large.' compare Mekle John Burne in Branxhelm, 1495, and Mekill Henry Nikson, 1516 (Liddesdale, p. 188,207). There is no evidence to support the suggestion that the name is a form of Michael. Willelmus Mykyl in the parish of Fyvy was excommunicated in 1382 (REA., I, p. 166), and Robertus Mykyl was juror on assize in 1389 regarding the mill-lands of Quarelwode, Moray (REM., p. 171). Willelmus Baxter Mykil was elected a 'lineator' in Aberdeen, 1398 (CRA., p. 374). William Mikil or Mykill was juror on inquest at Narn, 1431, for ascertaining the former tenure of the lands of Kilrawkis and Geddes (Rose, p. 127,129). Richard Mekill, notary public, 1501 (Cawdor, p. 110). Elizabeth alias Bessie Mekill was retoured heir portioner of John Mekill, burgess of Lynlythgow, 1609 (Retours, Linlithgow, 66), William Meikill was retoured heir of Thomas Meikill of Clokisland, his father, 1616 (Retours, Ayr, 141), and John Muckle was bellfounder in Glasgow, 1693 (RUG., III, p. 583).
