A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the lands of Middleton or Middletown of Conveth, in the parish of Laurencekirk, Kincerdineshire. The lands were so named to distinguish them from Conveth Mill and lands on one side and Westerton of Conveth on the other. For about three centuries the family here bore the designation of Middleton of that Ilk. The first of the name recorded appears to have been Umfridus de Midilton who witnessed a grant of the lands of Petmengartenach to the Abbey of Arbroath in 1221, and also a charter of 1238 (RAA., I, 242,261). Humfrey de Middiltone of the county of Kincardyn rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 209), and Robert de Middleton was a Scot taken at Dunbar Castle in the same year (ibid., 742). Andrew de Midleton witnessed a charter of the lands of Craigy in the Memys in 1357 (SCM., V, p. 248), and William Mydiltoune was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1488 (NSCM., I, p. 34). William Mediltoune appears in Glentanner in 1503 (Aboyne, p. 33). Mideltowne 1642, Midiltoun 1430, Midltoun 1652, Myddiltoun 1508, Myddiltoune 1471, Mydilton 1500.
