Midic Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Midic (Midić, or in Cyrillic, Мидић) is a South Slavic patronymic surname derived from the South Slavic forename Mida (Мида); that is, its bearers will have assumed it due to a paternal descent from a man named Mida. Mida is regarded as a pre-Phrygian name. Phrygia was a kingdom in what is now Turkey, though they were culturally similar to the Greeks. The Phrygian people are also thought to be of South European origin. This name is famous for its legendary holder, King Mida (or Midas), whose fabled ability to turn what he touched to gold is part of the colloquial of many nations. The ancient meaning of Mida is 'the luckiest throw at dice'. Though it is possible this may have been assumed after the life of the legendary king. Thus the surname Midic literally means, 'descendant of the luckiest cast at dice.' Contemporary sources often give the name as meaning 'golden.'

The surname is rare and is almost exclusively found in Serbia, a nation where patronymics are prevalent. Midic and the extremely rare Romanian name, Midescu, appear to be the only surviving surnames derived from the forename Midas.
