User-submitted Reference

It is believed that the Mihaljev surname originates from Montenegro, from a tribe by the name Piperi. In Montenegro in 1684 lived a prince by the name of Vlatko Mihaljev who paid tribute to Republic of Venice (Republica de Venexia). People with this surname live mostly in Serbia in North Banat, in cities of Choka and Kikinda. They settled in Banat in 1735 and before that they lived in Transylvania-Romania in military frontier. There are records which support this and show they lived there in 1590. It is unclear how they got there but most probably their ancestors settled Transylvania as military frontier guardsman from Zeta (Montenegro).
