The meaning of this surname is 'we are stronger', which in the Montenegrin language is translated to 'mi smo jači' or 'mi jači', which is a shortened version. The first known ancestor to all living Mijač in the world today was Mijat Abramović who was a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army in the 1700th century. He was stationed in Risan near Hercegovina where he allegedly killed a soldier in revenge for his best friend and had to flee inland to avoid the death penalty. He eventually settled in the village of Podgor, where he married his best friend's sister and changed his name to Mijač. This name originates from Montenegro and all Mijač in Croatia and the rest of the world are related and have the same ancestor.
