Minch Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(Anglo-Latin)Nun [Middle English minch, a nun: v. Minchin]
Minchin is a name of considerable antiquity in England where it is found in early mediaeval cartularies: it is derived from the Middle-English word minchen which means a nun (a derivation of monk) whence, according to Weekly, comes the well-known Mincing Lane in London.
It has been associated with Ireland since the Cromwellian period when Capt. Charles Minchin purchased estates in the neighbourhood of Roscrea in Counties Tipperary and Offaly. The family soon became firmly established in that area: in the 1659-60 “census” two of them are listed as tituladoes and no less than eight families of the name will be found in the Co. Tipperary hearth money rolls of 1665. Numerous Minchin wills are recorded for the same part of the country from that time until the present day; and Minchins appear as sheriffs of counties Tipperary and Offaly in the eighteenth century and as extensive landowners there in de Burgh's Landowners of 1878.
The origin of Minch, a name associated with Co. Kildare, is uncertain. Two suggestions have been made: that Minch is an abbreviation of Minchin; and that it is a variant of Minnis or Minnish, which Woulfe makes a Gaelic Irish surname, viz. Mac Naois, normally anglicized as MacNeice and sometimes MacNish. I do not accept either of these theories, but have no alternative suggestion to offer.
