A very old name in England (derived, like Mincing Lane, from Middle-English minchen, a nun) but unconnected with Ireland before the Cromwelliarl period when it became firmly established in the Roscrea area of Offaly and north Tipperary. Minch, a name associated with Co. Kildare, may be an abbreviation of Minchin or a variant of Minnish i.e. Mac Naois (W)
Probably an old personal name of the Anglo-Saxon period, whence the local names Minchinton and Minchinhampton. The Irish branch went over with William III., and almost all the owners of the name are said to be located in or about Moneygall, near Meuagh, co. Tipperary.
