This was long a surname of consequence in Selkirk. Its first recorded holder was Sir John Mitchellhill, a "Pope's knight," chaplain and notary public in 1512. George Mirchellhill was bailie of Selkirk in 1590 (RPC., IV, r 480). Jonet Mitchelhill or Michelhill was the wife of Andro Hart, the Edinburgh printer. Her will (dated 17 March 1606) is printed in the Bannatyne Club Miscellany, II p. 238-241. Three of this name were members of the Scottish parliament for Selkirk between 1579-1667 (Hanna, II, p, 506). The name still recorded in Edinburgh (1942). The surname is derived from the small estate of Mitchellhill (= Michael's Hill) in Peeblesshire.
