Mjorud Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
Mjorud is a Norwegian surname. In a Norwegian land register from around 1400, it is written 'j Miulnurudi', where mjulna is an old word for 'mill', and rud, which means 'clearing'. The name is then to be understood as 'clearing at the mill', or 'clearing of the mill'. This agrees well with the local history, which says that there was a mill at Mjørud in Rakkestad, Norway. Emigrants from the Norwegian Mjørud families to the US, changed the Norwegian letter 'Ø' to the letter 'O', when they settled there. And the surname became Mjorud.
