Mobray Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A surname of Norman origin from the ancient barony of Mombray in Calvados. The first of the name in Scotland was probably Robert de Moubray who witnessed the gift of Staplegortoun to Kelso Abbey, probaly in the reign of Malcolm IV (Kelso, 350). Philip de Moubray who sat in curia regis, 1208, was probably his son. Philip de Mubraj (3 = i) appears as witness to a charter of the church of Boeltun before 1200 (LSC., 33), and about the same date witnessed charters by William the Lion (ibid., 30, 39, 44; Kelso, 412). Between 1204-14 he witnessed two charters in favor of the Abbey of Arnbroath by Roger de St. Michaele and Umfridus de Berkelay (RAA., I, 81, 89), and a charter by William the Lion to Galfrid, steward of Kingorn (Laing, 3). With Galiena, his wife, he gifted the church of Muirkethin to the monks of Dunfermline, c. 1202-14 (RD., 94). He also attested King William grant of right of a fair and his "firm peace" to the bishop of Glasgow, c. 1211 (REG., p. 38), and also witnessed the grant of Lympetlaw to the Hospital of Soltre, c. 1221-31 (Soltre p. 25). Roger de Mubray sat in council, c. 1225, and was sheriff of Edinbergh, Linlithgow, and Haddington. For the adherence of the family to Baliol and the English interests a large part of their lands were forfeited (RMS., I, 590; App. II, 502,835, 1098, 1127). William and Andrew Mobrey were merchants in Edinbergh, 1490 (Bain, IV, 1565). On the marriage of Robert Bertoun of Overbertoun with the daughter and heiress of John Mowbray in 1528 he was permitted by the Estates of Perliament to "be callit moubray and haue and bier þat surnem" (APS., II, p. 321a). Mowbra 1532, Mubbray 1428, Mvbrav 1648.
