Moher Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Ó Móchair From the earliest record up to modern times almost exclusively of west Waterford and east Cork. SIF 115

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

We have here a name of a family or minor sept which has been found from the earliest relevant record till the present day almost exclusively in Cos. Waterford and Cork, especially in the territory lying between Mitchelstown in east Cork and Lismore in Co. Waterford. The 23 Moher householders in Griffith's Valuation (1851-3) were all in the east Cork barony of Condons.

Woulfe gives Ó Móthair as the Gaelic-Irish form, but Ó Móchair is, I think, preferable. It appears in the “census” of 1659 as a principal Irish name in every barony of Co. Waterford under the spelling Mogher-in Co. Cork it is there given as O'Mohir.
