MOIGNE: From OF. moigne, 'monk.' Marjory Moigne, a widow in Berwick, raised proceedings in a lawsuit in Edinburgh. 1291 (Burton, History of Scotland, II, p. 158), and Wautier le Moigne of Berwickshire rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 206). Complaint was made in 1345 that the church of Kynneff had been given to Robert Moyne 'then under twenty years of age" (Pap. Pet., I, p. 85). Walter Moygne, knight, witnessed a charter by David II in 1361 (REA., I, p. 90). The lands of Drum which belonged to John Moigne were granted to Alexander de Irwyne, 1389 (RMS., I, 774). Thomas Moygne was 'seriand' of Edinburgh, 1411 (Cambus., 94), and Walter Moyngne was charter witness in Aberdeen, 1426 (RMS., II, 55).
