A descriptive name from Gaelic mo, 'big.' The surname is an Aberdonian one, and in Aberdeen it is pronounced More, a spelling also found in early record. Robertus More was one of the burgesses in Aberden, 1317 (SCM., V, p. 10). Reginald More witnessed an Elphinstone charter, c. 1341 (Elphinstone, I, p. 6), and John More was a canon of Aberdeen, 1366 (REA., II, p. 58). Simon More was charged with being a forestaller in Aberdeen, 1402 (CRA., p. 383), and William More was tenant of Uthircloy, Ardmanoch, 1504 (ER., XII, p. 661). The name of the family of Moir of Stonywood was in the eighteenth century spelled Moer, More, and Moore. Mayr and Moyr 1538. compare also Moar.
