This surname means Moldavian (Romanian: 'Moldovan'), referring to someone who came from the Principality of Moldavia. This Principality is now an integral part of Romania, however, much of its lost land became a Republic in its eastern part; which was known as Bessarabia. Much of Bessarabia, along with Western Moldavia (more specifically, Northern Bukovina) are in Ukraine. This surname is simultaneously Romanian (+ Moldovan) and also Ukrainian.

'Moldavia' being a Latinised form of Romanian 'Moldova', is named after the River Moldova, the etymology of this river is varied... however, the Principality of Moldavia was supposedly named this because the Voivode of Moldavia, Dragoş, had his dog (Molda) drown in the river whilst fighting a dragon.
