Moluag Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MOLUAG: S. Moluag or Mo-Luag, a contemporary of Columba, was founder and patron saint of the church of Lismore, afterwards the see of Argyll. His bachul or crozier, now in possession of the duke of Argyll, was long preserved in the island of Lismore. The saint's name originally was Lughaidh (pron. Lua), and with the endearing suffix -oc and the honorific mo- it became Moluag (Latinized Molocus), i.e. 'my dear little Lua.' in 1249 a mandate was directed to the bishops of Glasgow and Dunblane to transfer the see of Argyll from the island on which it now is to some more secure and accessible place, the king of Scotland having offered to contribute to the expenses (Pap. Lett., I, p. 251). Malooc filius comitis was one of the witnesses to a charter to Gyllethomas, 1199 (RAA., I, p. 262). In a contract made c. 1224—33 between the bishop of Moray and Lord Walter Cumyn regerding certain lands in Badenoch, mention is made of Gyllemallouock Macnakeeigelle, nativus, i.e. a bondman (REM., p. 84). The name of the dean of Lismore in 1251 was appropriately Gillemeluoc. John M'Ilmolnaage (read-uaage) in Crare (Crarare on Loch Fyne) is in record in 1672 (HP., II, p. 208), and Barbara M'Ilmoluag in Clengert, parish of Killean, is in record, 1693 (Argyll Inv.). Alexander Gilmaleoch appears in Newmyll, Perthshire, 1530 (RMS., III, 975).
