Monarca Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Monarca is a surname whose traces date back to the Middle Ages in Southern Italy, in the small town of Sessa Aurunca (near Caserta, Southern Italy). The word, monarca, is Italian for 'monarch', or 'king'. According to some sources, this surname was chosen as a replacement by the members of the Tata family, whose origin was Jewish, because in 1541 an edict against Jews was promulgated. The Chronicles written by Gasparro Fuscolillo in the 1550s state the existence of "missere Beldisarro de' Minarcha", whose surname was then muted to Monarca. Some other sources say instead that a King of Naples received hospitality from a family in Sessa and then authorised the family to use Monarca as their surname. Despite those uncertainties, it is sure that Giulio Gaetano Monarca de' Monarca was nominated major of Sessa in 1609 and that this surname was linked to noble families.

After this, in the 17th and 18th century a part of the family migrated to the Marche region and to Tropea (Calabria); after that some others moved near Rome.

This surname comes from the verb monear, meaning 'to make coins'. Monar may be the apocope of monarca (monarch).
