There are a number of Gaelic speaking families of this name in Benbecula and North Uist, and it would be interesting to know how long they have been settled in the Outer Isles (Celt. Mon.). The name is an Anglicizing of Macmanachan, which see. Domhnall of Ile had a son, a monk, and it was in his time that Baile-an-Mhanuidh in Uist was given to the Church, i.e. In 1440 (M'Vurich, Rel. Celt., II, p. 211).
