(English) belonging to Monckton, Monkton = the Monk’s or Monks’ Farm or Estate [Old English munuc, a monk; tún, farm, &c.] Monkton, Kent occurs as Munccetun in a Latin charter of A.D. 961. Monkton, Durham, belonged to the monks of Jarrow. At Monkton-Farleigh, Wilts, there are the ruins of a Cluniac convent.
This family are of great antiquity in co. York, and derive their descent from Simon Monckton of Monckton, near Boroughbridge, which lordship his posterity enjoyed until it was made a nunnery in the year 1326, and called Nuu-Monckton. Courthope's Debrett.
Or De Amundeville, from A. Normandy. Ranulph de Munneville had possessions in Warwick 1130 (Rot. Pip.), and in York as Ranulph de Monkton, whose son Robert de M. confirmed his gifts to Fountains (Burton, Mon. Ebor. 202), and as Robert de Mundeville held five fees in York of the see of Durham 1165 (Lib. Niger). He had a brother Ralph de Amundeville, who 1165 held a fief Yorkshire, and was father of Ralph de A., who 1200 had a suit for a fief in Monkton (Rotuli Curiae Regis). The family of Monkton continues to appear 13th, 14th, and 15th cents. Hence the Viscounts Galway.
