MONFODE: An extinct surname of territorial origin from the lands of that name on Montfode Burn, parish of Ardrossan, Ayrshire. The early generations of the family were vassals of the De Morvilles. The first of the name recorded appears to be John de Monfoit who witnessed a donation by Humphrey de Berkley de Mathers to the monks of Arbroath, c. 1156 (Nisbet, II, p. 246). John de Monfode had a charter from Robert I, c. 1320, of part of the barony of Trauirnent formerly belonging to William de Ferrars (RMS., I, 58), and also a grant of the barony of Skrauelyne and the lands of Robertstoun in Lanarkshire from the same king (RMS., I, App. II, 600). Agnes de Munfode had a charter of a piece of land called Hawthomesyk in the barony of Abercorn in 1340 (RHM., II, p. 40, 41) and David II confirmed a charter by Margaret de Monfoode in 1362 establishing a chapel in the church of Dunnanyne. Finlai de Monfode de eodem was juror in Irvine, 1417 (Irvine, I, p. 20), James Montfoyd was killed in the battle of Fawsyde (Pinkie) in 1547 (Retours, Ayr, 3), and John Montfode of Montfode, said to have been the last of his line, appears in the list of Commissioners of Supply tor Ayrshire in 1661. John Manfood, sometime in Donachadie, appears at Kirkcudbright, 1677 (Kirkcudbright). Robertson, writing in 1823 says: 'Their memory has perished, nor is there a person now of the name known to exist, nor any name that bears a resemblance to it" (m, p. 294).
