MONILAW, Monilaws: From Moneylaws near Branxton, Northumberland (in 1261 spelled Monilawe). Adam Monilaw appears as abbot of Nova Fernia (Fearn) in Ross between 1398-1407 (Beauly, p. 313; OPS., II, p. 436). In 1426 mention is made of the land of William de Monilaw in Lauder (Soltre, p. 51). Andrew and John Monelaw witnessed an instrument of recognition in 14c (RAA., II, 106), and in 1477 Thomas Monelaw witnessed a notarial instrument (Cawdor, p. 63), George Monnilaws was tenant of Blackburn and Millands, 1763 (Craw, Chirnside Common, p. 18). A man named Mangelous (probably an error for Manzelaus (3 = guttural y) was charged with destroying salmon fishings on the river Dee, 1533 (Trials, j, p. 163).
