User-submitted Reference
The family name, Mountain, is believed to have originated in an ancient province named Languedoc. The ancient Kingdom of Languedoc previously encompassed larger territories and extended further to the north and to the west than is shown today. This surname was first found in Languedoc in south-east France where they were distinguished members of the aristocracy, and were seated at Montiver. Throughout the course of history most surnames have undergone change for many reasons. A son may not even choose to spell his name the way that his father did. Many are simple spelling changes by a person who gave his version, phonetically, to a scribe, a priest, or a recorder. Many names held prefixes or suffixes which became optional as they passed through the centuries, or were adopted by different branches to signify either a political or religious adherence. Amongst the settlers in North America with this distinguished name Mountain were Mr. Lamontaigne who settled in Louisiana in 1719; Charles Lamontaigne arrived in Quebec from Ile-de-France in 1749; Nicholas De La Montagne settled in Maryland in 1670. Meanwhile, many of this distinguished family name Mountain were prominent in social, cultural, religious and political affairs in France and New France; Guy Lamontaigne, Lieutenant Governor of Quebec.
