Montgomerie Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Montgomerie,' near Lisieux, in Normandy. Of this great family, which gave name to the shire and town of Montgomery in Wales, Lower says, 'One of them, Roger de Montgomery, a kinsman of the Conqueror, accompanied him, and led the centre of his army at Hastings' (Patronymica Britannica). It is more natural to refer back the surname to the Norman estate than to the county to which the family gave their name.
Fulco de Mongomery, Devon, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Lucia de Mongomery, Nottinghamshire, ibid.
Gregory de Montgomery, Salop, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
1530. John Dalton and Elizabeth Mungumbery: Marriage Lic. (London).
1745. Married — Hugh Fergusson and Margaret Montgomery: St. George, Hanover Square.
1758. — George Montgomerie and Elizabeth Lloyd: ibid.
The Memorables of the Montgomeries, a narrative in rhyme (Glasgow, 1770) referring to the origin of this name says:
"A noble Roman was the root
From which Montgomeries came,
Who brought his legions from the war, And settled the same Upon an hill 'twixt Rome and Spain, Gomericus by name;
From which he and his offspring do Their sir-name still retain."Stolen from Fore bears
The name is, however, of territorial origin from the ancient casde of Sainte Foi de Montgomery in the diocese of Lisieux in Normandy. "The name of this castle," says Freeman (Norman conquest, 1873 ed., II, p. 128)"enjoys a peculiar privilege above all others in Norman geography. Other spots in Normandy have given their names to Norman houses and these Norman houses have transferred these names to English castles and English towns and villages. But there is only one shire in Great Britain which has had the name of a Norman lordship impressed upon it forever." The first of the name in Scotland appears to have been Robert de Mundegumri who obtained a grant of the maner of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire. He appears as witness in a charter by Walter Fitz-Alan, c. 1165, endowing the monastery of Paisley (RMP., p. 5). He also appears as witnessing many charters to the abbeys of Paisley, Kelso, and Melrose between 1165 ard 1177, as recorded in their chartularies, in 1354 an indulgence was granted John de Mongombro (REB,, II, 395). MacCuimrid (in Gaelic), Makgarmory 1512, Montegomorry 1437, Montegoumeri c. 1180, Montgomrie 1684, Montgomry 1557, Montgumery 1559, Montgumre 1529, Montgumry 1501, Montgumrie 1687, Montgumrye 1509, Montgurie (probably for Montgurie) 1653, Monthgumry and Monthtgumry 1548, Mountgomrie 1661, Mowngumry 1482, Mundgumri 1170, Mundgumbry 1519, Mungumre 1521, Mungumri 1487, Mungumry 1559, Mungumbry 1500, Muntgomery 1672, Mwngwmry 1562, Mongumre 1592, Mongumrie 1574, and in an old version of the ballad of Chevy Chase Monggombyrry. In local pronunciation corrupted to M'Girmory.
Robert de Montgomery (or as the old mis-spelling genealogists had it, De Mumdegrumbie) appears to have accompanied Walter, the high steward, ancestor of the royal house of Stuart, from Wales into Scotland, where he acquired from him the manor of Eglisham, co. Renfrew, which still belongs to his lineal descendant, the Earl of Eglintoun.
Mont-Gomerie is near Lisieux in Normandy. Its counts, says Dubois, "jouent un role important dans I'histoire de Normandie." One of them, Boger de M., a kinsman of the Conqueror, accompanied him, and led the centre of his army at Hastings. In reward for his services, he was created Earl of Arundel and Shrewsbury, and received manors in many counties. From him the town and shire of Montgomery, in Wales, derive their name.
The name is of Norman origin. Roger de Montgomerie came into England with William the Conqueror; his son Philip de Montgomerie, who settled in Scotland, where he received a grant of the lands of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire and died in 1140, was the ancestor of the Scottish family of Montgomery.
A corruption of the Latin "Mons Gomeris," Gomer's mount. Gomer, the son of Japhet, the hereditary name of the Gauls.
A Norman name: From the Domesday Book, de Montgomery.
A gentle family of Montgomery resided in Daventry last century; the ancient distinguished family of De Montgomery held extensive estates in Ecton between the 13th and the 16th centuries (B.).
