From the town of Montrose in Angus. Henry de Monros, chaplain, witnessed confirmation charters by Gregory, bishop of Brechin, c. 1218-22 (REB., II, 256,270, 271), and Mestre Matheu de Monros, clerk, in Perth, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 200). John de Monros appears as perpetual vicar of the church of Tarwais (Tarves) in 1342 (RAA., II, p. 14), Nicholas of Munroos, a Scots prisoner of war, was discharged from Newgate prison in 1375 (Bain, IV, 237), Robert of Montrose, prior of Saint Serf's, was elected prior of St. Andrews in 1385, and another Robert de Monros was rector of Quylk or Quylt in 1392 (Cambus., 76, 77). Robert of Montrose, prior of St. Andrews, was stabbed to death by one of the brethren (Bower, ed Goodall, I, c. 54).
