Moonan Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Ó Muanáin The Oriel form of the Munster Moynan. SIF 116
It may be accepted as correct that Ó Muanáin (anglicized Moonan) is etymologically an Oriel form of Ó Maonáin (Moynan); I have no direct evidence that they are genealogically connected, but the fact that in our earlier records, e.g. the fourteenth century Justiciary Rolls and even in the sixteenth century Fiants, O'Monan and O'Monane are the names of Munstermen would suggest that probability. Though Moynan and Moonan do not appear to have ever been used as synonyms, Moynan and Moynihan have been reported as such from Co. Offaly; but Moynihan (see Irish Families pp. 182,183) is almost exclusively a Cork - Kerry surname. Moonan-occasionally Monan-is now found mainly in or near Co. Louth, and as O'Monyne it occurs in the Co. Armagh hearth money rolls of 1664-65.
