The Itinerdire de la Normandie, speaking of the place whence the Mohuns derived their name, says: "Masseville appelle ce bourg Moon." in the Roll of Carlaverock (A.D. 1300) John de Mohun is called John de Mooun (Nicholas's ed., p. 18), George Moon, changekeeper in Kilspindie, and James Moon, his son, are mentioned in 1711 (DPD., II, p. 280), and Henry Moon in Fordie, 1722 (Dunkeld).

A corruption of Mohun, or it may be local, from the island Anglesey or Mon a, so called, as some suppose, from mwyn, Welsh, mines, from its stone—quarries and mines; others derive it from mon or mona, alone, separated. Mwyn, Welsh, affable, pleasant.
