Moorcock Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Maurice,' from the nick. Mor (v. Morin), with the suffix -cock (v. Cock) as in Wilcock, &c. It may possibly be a nickname = Moorcock, the red grouse, but the first definition is more natural and according to rule. The fact that Mor-kin also existed (compare Jenkin, Wilkin, &c.) is additional evidence. On the other hand, Moorhen (which see) also existed as a nickname. It is hard, after all, to say which is the true definition.—Since writing the above I have lighted on an entry in Kirby's Quest which settles the matter:

Morecok Chepman, Somerset, 1 Edward III: Kirby's Quest.

Nicholas Morcok, Somerset, 1 Edward III: ibid.

Morckin de Vautham, London, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

Morekin le Wolmongere, London, ibid.

Henricus Morekok, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.

Joan Morccocke, 1661: St. Peter, Cornhill.

1625. Nicholas Morecocke and Anne Eate: Marriage Lic. (London).

1773. Married — William Price and Sarah Moorcock: St. George, Hanover Square.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley
