This surname comes from the name of the river Morantin in France.
It's possible that the name comes from the Romans, where Caesar built a camp near at the time of his conquest of Gaul and called it Roma Minor (Little Rome), apparently because of the resemblance of the plains of the city with the capital.
It comes from morant or morand, meaning 'steadfast' in old French. Or alternatively it could be of Germanic origin and meaning 'courage-raven'.
