From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the moor-house,' the cottage situate on the moor, a local name common to many places. I had a Moorhouse in my parish (Ulverston), a farmstead still far separated from other abodes. It gave rise to a family of Moorhouses resident in the immediate district for centuries. Some of the many Yorkshire Moorhouses, or Morehouses, are doubtless sprung from Moorhouse, now increased to a hamlet in the parish of Hooton Pagnell, near Doncaster. Naturally we find this name predominant in the North.
