From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

An adjective formed from the Spanish "mora" - blackberry. Hence "someone of a dark color."

Popular surname well known in France, and brought to Spain by Romans. Common in Santander, La Rioja, Aragon, Castile, Estremadura, and Andalusia. Name of village near Albacete. May be derived from word "murenas" - an eel, or like an eel. Some researchers define name as meaning blackened or brown as in a sunburn.

It could come from the latin "maurus" which could refer to an ethnic group and also to a man who is cruel and unyielding. In Spain "moro" with the suffix "-eno" refers to all Muslims and in a general sense to someone who is not baptized.

Castilian name traced to Roman knight Lucio Murena. Very common in the Peninsula with most ancient branches in Santander, La Rioja, Aragon, Galicia and New Castile.

Moreno Ferreira is a branch of a Moreno family that migrated from Galicia (Spain) to the North of Portugal. Augusto César Moreno, one of many brothers, had three daughters. One of them, Amélia, married Luís Setas Ferreira, from the Setas Ferreira family. They had five children: Marieta, Maria Amélia, Marcelo Henrique, Manuel Vicente and Marita Olga, all of them having the Moreno Ferreira family name, as most of their children and grandchildren.

Both the Moreno and Ferreira were of Jewish origin. In Portugal, many Jews were forced to convert to Catholicism and start using Ferreira as family name, following the tradition of naming themselves after their trade and fruit trees.Ferreira means blacksmith in Portuguese; the original word is ferreiro (male), but the family name got to be ferreira (female).
