Morham Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

John de Malherb and Adam de Malherb obtained the manor of Morham in East Lothian about the middle of the twelfth century, and the family assumed their surname from it. Adam de Moreham had a charter, c. 1200, of the mill of Stanehous (Neubotle, p. 75), and Thomas de Moram witnessed grant of Balnebucht to the monks of Neubotle about the same date (ibid., p. 6). John de Morham filius John Malherb made an amicable agreement with the same monks regarding the watercourses of their respective mills, c. 1220 (ibid., p. 67). Sir John Moreham had as wife Ada de Coluyl and their son Adam de Morham confirmed his mother's gift to Neubotle Abbey, 1249 (Neubotle, p. 170). Herbert de Morham, Scots prisoner of war, was sent to Rockingham Castle, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 177). Thomas de Morham, senior, held the lands of Kymbrigham (Kimmorghame), Berwickshire, c. 1315-21 (RMS., I, 5). The family ended in the direct line in an heiress, Eufemia, who married John Giffard of Yester in the reign of Robert I (RMS., I, App. I, 39; Dalrymple, p. xxxviii). John de Morham obtained the lands of Pannebrid in Angus from William the Lion, and the surname of Morham or Moram survived in the Barry district till within recent years. The tombstone of David Moram, dated 1656, is in the kirkyard of Monikie. Morham is also an old surname in the joint parishes of Larbert and Dunipace (Jervise LL, p. 382). About 1200 this John de Morham witnessed a grant to Cambuskenneth Abbey (Cambus., 79), and c. 1220 he confirmed to the monks of Arbroath the patronage of the church of Pannebrid (RAA., I, p. 19). This John de Morham appears to have died without issue and was succeeded by his brother, Adam de Morham, who confirmed the grant of Pannebrid to Arbroath (ibid., p. 20-21). Adam de Morham was one of twelve knights appointed in 1249 to meet twelve from England to settle the law of the marches (APS., I, p. 413). Henry de Moreham witnessed a charter by Randulf de Strathphetham, c. 1222 (REB., II, 3), and John de Morame, clericus meus, witnessed the gift by Robert de Lundris, one of the illegitimate sons of William me Lion, or tne church of Rothuen to Arnbroath Abbey (RAA., I., p. 41) See Malherb.
