From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Morris.' From Morrison to Morson was a natural transition; compare Morse for Morris. The 'm' in Moorsom presents no difficulty, as the final -son was often corrupted to -som; compare Ransom, Hansom, Sansom. Nevertheless Mr. Lower's suggestion that it is for Moorsham, a township in the parish of Skelton, North Riding of Yorks, must not be overlooked. I see the Modern Domesday Book has one instance in the North Riding. This confirms Mr. Lower's view.
