When William became Duke of Normandy, he lost no opportunity of raising his kinsfolk from their humble estate, to the disgust and indignation of his nobles, and above all of his relatives on the side of his father. Robert was rewarded for his services in the Conquest of England by being given the whole of Cornwall, comprising 248 manors, 52 in Sussex, 75 in Devon, 10 in Suffolk, 29 in Buckinghamshire, 99 in Northamptonshire, 196 in Yorkshire, besides others in other counties.
