Mortell Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Mortell is the usual spelling of this name now, but in the nineteenth century the variants Mortal, Mortall, Mortel and Mortil were recorded. It is synonymous with Martell and has two derivations: either from Martellus, akin to Martin, or it can be a nickname or occupational surname from the Old French martel (a hammer). I have noted references to it in Ireland in every century since the thirteenth, at first almost entirely in Co. Tipperary, where the parish of Mortlestown perpetuates the name; soon after we find it in Co. Limerick around Kilmallock, and later in Co. Cork in the Mallow-Fermoy area.

In 1576 Martell of Martellston (presumably Ballymartle) was one of the county jury and in 1652 'Martel was one of the most numerous names in the city of Cork. In the Tipperary hearth money rolls of 1666 the family is called Morteel. John Mortall, gent, of Co. Cork was among the Jacobites outlawed after their defeat in 1690. A Mortell was M.P. for Trim in 1560, which is the only instance I have met of any importance outside Munster: this is perhaps the same as Robert Mortell who appears in the Fitzwilliam Accounts as receiver of Customs at Trim. In 1560.
