Mortiboy Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. This name has been placed in the roll of fame by Sir W. Besant and the late Mr. Rice in their story Readymoney Mortiboy. It is no fancy name, as the London Directory proves. Manifestly its last syllable is the Frenchbois (v. Boys or Boyce), a wood, as in Talboys. This is confirmed by the entry:

1700. Baptised — Jane, d. John Morteboyes: St. James, Clerkenwell.

1702. — Rebecca, d. John Morteboys: ibid.

As I have found no earlier reference, I presume it is of fairly modern French extraction. I wonder where Sir W. Besant or Mr. Rice met it? Many of Charles Dickens' characters will be met with in this dictionary.
