Morville Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MOREVILLE: The name of a great Anglo-Norman family which acquired vast possessions in Tweeddale, most of Lauderdale, and other lands in Lothian and Cunningham. Curiously enough, of their place of residence in Scotland, there is no record. Hugh de Moreville, the first recorded of the name in Scotland, was a lifelong friend of King David I, which probably accounts for the great territorial possessions of the family. Hugh became Constable of Scotland before 1140, founded Dryburgh Abbey and the monastery of Kilwinning, and died at an advanced age in 1162 (Chron. Mail., s.a.). The name has been extinct in Scotland since the thirteenth century.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

This parish, near Valognes in Normandy, gave its name, says De Gerville, to one of the Conquerors at Hastings, 1066, whose descendants were long barons of England, Scotland, and Normandy. Mem. Soc. Antiq. Norman 1825.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Morville: from a castle of that name in the Cotentin. The first named is Hugh de Morville, the founder of the English house in 1158. He was one of the four knights who went from Normandy to slay Thomas à Becket. The family obtained a high position in the North. It became of great account in Scotland. This is certainly an interpolation. The name in Scotland became Marvell.
