Bapt 'the servant of Moss, 'i.e. Moses (v. Moss, a); compare Matthewman, Wilman, Bartleman, &c. It is curious to notice that Mossman, as a modern surname, is commonest in Yorkshire, the county that has given us the largest number of surnames of this particular class. Moses was a popular font-name in the 13th and 14th centuries. (2) Local, 'the mossman,' one who lived on or close by a moss. I am obliged to suggest this, but doubt not (1) is the correct interpretation.

Thomas Mosman witnessed a charter by Stephen Flemyng. Master of the Hospital of Soltre, in 1426 (Soltre, p. 52), and Andrew Mossman was tenant of Stobo in 1534 (Rental). John Mossman was clerk of the diocese of Glasgow in 1541 (Home, p. 252), Patrick Mosman was notary and burgess freeman of Glasgow in 1601 (Burgesses), and John Mossman was burgess of Paisley in 1550 (Protocols, I). Allan Mosman was a landowner in the county of Roxburgh in 1532, and in the sixteenth century there were burgesses, notaries, and goldsmiths of the name in Edinburgh (Stodart, II, p. 354). William Mosman was beheaded for manslaughter of Ralph Weir in 1532 (Trials, I, p. 159).
