This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Mottershead,' a spot in the township of Mottram St. Andrew, in the parish of Prestbury, Cheshire.

A family of the name of Mottershead held lands in this township from an early period.... An ancient deed without date, and probably of the 12th or 13th century, says that "Edward, son of Gamyl, lord of Mottram, gave to William, his son and heir, all that land in Mottersheyed, in the vill of Mottram, ... which John de Chellegh then held, from which place he was called William de Mottershead, and his descendants Mottershead of Mottram."
