The Mottweiler Surname if first found int the 1730s in Hennweiler, Bad Kreuznach, Rheinland-Pfalz, Deutschland/Germany. The Mottweiler family came to America through the entry of New Orleans, Louisiana in the 1830s and another wave of cousins in the 1850s who flourished in Floyd and Spencer counties, Indiana. Several Mottweilers helped during the Civil War in the 1860s and lost there lives on the Union side. When brother fought brother one Mottweiler family changed there name to "Mottwiler". Since then the surname has been slowing dying out; only a handful remain.
