This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Moultrie.' As stated by Mr. Lower, 'A small river in Fifeshire, now called the Motray.'

The first of this name in Scotland was probably Adam de Multreve, burgess of Berwick, who swore fealty to Englan there in 1292 (Fcedera, I, p. 772). Adam de Multreve witnessed a charter of Grothill (now Greenhill, a suburb of Edinburgh) in the reign of David 11, along with Henry Multrar, burgess of Edinburgh, who had the lands from Henry Rraid of that Ilk (Egidii, p. 3-15). George Mutrich in Edinburgh was ordered to be burnt on the cheek and banished the city, 1530 (MCM., II, p. 105), and Henricus Moultray had a lease of lands of Gouillis and Lochhillis, 1543 (REA., I, p. 422). Wynnin Multray held a tenement in Irvine, 1542 (Irvine, I, p. 199). The General Register House, Edinburgh, is built on the site of the Moutray estate as shown on Gordon of Rothiemay's map of Edinburgh, 1647. General William Moultrie, governor of South Carolina, 1785-87, 1794-96 was son of a Scottish physician, Dr. John Moultrie.
