Mow Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Various individuals named "de Molle" appear in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries but their relationship is uncertain. They took their name from the territory of Molle, now Mow in the upper half of the parish of Morebattle, Roxburghshire. Liulf of Molle appears to have lived in the reigns of Alexander I and David I, and his son Uctred had the town of Molle and the patronage of the church sometime before the year 1152 (Kelso, p. VI after Tabula, and 14,144, 320) About the same date Vctred, the son of Liulf, granted to the monks of Kelso the church of Molle with its adjacent land and the common pasture of the town of Molle (ibid., p. 144), a grant confirmed by Herbert, bishop of Glasgow (ibid., p. 320) and by King Malcolm IV in 1159 (ibid., p. VI after Tabula). Anselm de Molle, who was also known as Anselm de Wittun, sometime between 1165 and 1190 made a gift of territory in Molle to the Abbey of Kelso (ibid., 13). About 1170 King; William the Lion confirmed the earlier grant by Vctred de Molle of the church of Molle to Kelso (ibid., 12), and about 1180 Henry de Molle witnessed a gift by Galfrid Ridel to the same abbey (ibid., 368). Eschina de Londoniis, also known as Lady Eschina de Molle, seems to have inherited the possessions of Uctred sometime before 1177 (RMP., p. 74—76; Melros; Kelso). She married, secondly, Henry of Molle (Kelso, p. 114,135, 146), and had four daughters, Margaret, Eschina, Avicia, and Cecilia. On the death of the last named the family appears to have become extinct in the direct line. In 1185 Gillem' de Molle witnessed Eschina de London's gift of the church of Molle, "as far as it belonged to her," to Kelso (ibid., 146). Alexander de Mollt witnessed resignation of the patronage of the church of Killosbern (Closeburn) in 1278, and in the following year Radulf de Molle witnessed settlement of a dispute regarding the tithes of the church of Roberton (ibid., 34,346). In 1490 Robert Mow resigned his lands Into the king's hands, who, in the same year, regranted them to John Mow, Robert's brother (RMS.). Robert Mow was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1534 (NSCM., I, p. 53). In the sixteenth century the Mows of that Ilk figure in criminal trials (Trials, I, p. 176,230, 256, etc.), and in 1575 the laird of Mow was slain at the battle of Redeswire (Border Minstrelsy). Alexander Mow of the convent of Dunfermline is in record in 1555 (Laing, 633). James Mow in Dalkeith was summoned before the Privy Council in 1566 (RPC I, p. 444), Robert Mow was a tenant of the Abbey of Kelso in 1567 (Kelso, p. 528), and in 1603 John Mow appears as a burgess of the town of Elgin and master of the sang (II, p. 447). Mr. John Mow was "maister of the Music Scule" in Dundee in 1628 (SCM., II, p. 44). Mr. William Mow, W. S., and his brother Mr, John Mow of Mains, obtained authority upon application to the Court of Session, 11th August, 1789, to alter the spelling of their surname from Mow to Molle, the original form of the name (Nisbet, I, p. 319).
