A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

This is a Co. Donegal name. It would appear to be of dual origin. Woulfe gives the Gaelic form Ó Muighe on the authority of the Gaelic Journal. It can be accepted as native Irish because in a return made in. 1751 by the parish priest of Stranorlar there are three O'Moyes. On the other hand we find Henry Moy an undertaker in the Plantation of Ulster; about the same time there was a noted English 116‘pirate called Lambert Moye: it is possible, of course, that he was of Irish descent. There are seven places in Ireland called Moy, one of which is in Co. Donegal, as well as the river in Co. Mayo, but there is no reason to believe that the surname has a connexion with any of these.
