Moyland Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The surname has a monastic meaning of 'bald pated man', a reference to the tonsured haircut of monks, though it is hard to imagine that all of the Moylans in the world are the progeny of Monks. The origins of the name however are to do with the land. The river Moy runs through the counties of Sligo and Mayo in the Republic of Ireland where long stretches of the river pass through highly productive and valuable farming land. In this part of the world Moy often appears at the end of town names meaning "of the plain" Fermoy being an example, simply meaning men of the plain, the plain usually, but not always, referring to good farming land, notable exceptions being Galmoy, which means stoney plain. Moylan in it's current form and it's variants including Moyland are most likely derived from this root simply meaning people of the plains or people of the land, or more simply put, farmers.
